00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:25.680
of you, you probably know this, but just a history, there was a verse in Proverbs

00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:32.320
that was brought up to me when I grew up in the church, and who else grew up in

00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:36.320
the church? You might grow up like, okay, some of them, man, raise your hand if you

00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:42.760
didn't grow up and and like, all right, they're like, they're like trauma, what's

00:00:42.760 --> 00:00:57.040
that? Different trauma, different trauma, we all got our own trauma. So I kind of got

00:00:57.040 --> 00:01:03.040
into a point where I was like, I don't understand why, like why is fear so

00:01:03.040 --> 00:01:17.240
prominent in teaching, in our faith, and then seeing kind of how our world is

00:01:17.240 --> 00:01:26.800
operating right now, and watching as churches and pastors were, I just, I saw

00:01:26.800 --> 00:01:32.240
a lot of fear, right? And it didn't make sense to me, like, why are we so

00:01:32.240 --> 00:01:37.240
afraid? Why is fear such, it's not a good motivator, we know it's not, and so when

00:01:37.240 --> 00:01:41.560
we started talking about that, you guys know this, but I did a video, somebody

00:01:41.560 --> 00:01:46.440
brought up a verse, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, I did, that

00:01:46.440 --> 00:01:51.880
doesn't make sense to me, how does fear lead you to wisdom? Didn't make sense, so

00:01:51.880 --> 00:01:55.680
deep dive on the word for fear, I'm not gonna tell you what it is, because I've

00:01:55.680 --> 00:02:03.720
got a question for you later, and found that ah, like, reverent ah was

00:02:03.720 --> 00:02:13.960
actually the word there, which is a different response than fear, and it's a

00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:19.440
perspective shift is really what it is, I'm gonna read you a passage real

00:02:19.440 --> 00:02:24.640
quick in Mark 4, you guys have heard this story I'm sure, so later that day,

00:02:24.640 --> 00:02:30.160
after it grew dark, Jesus said to His disciples, let's cross over to the other

00:02:30.160 --> 00:02:35.960
side of the lake, after they had sent the crowd away, they shoved off from shore

00:02:35.960 --> 00:02:40.960
with Him, as He had been teaching from the boat, and there were other boats that

00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:49.520
sailed with them, suddenly, as they were crossing the lake a ferocious

00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:56.720
tempest a rose, what's a tempest? It's ferocious, tempest a rose with violent winds

00:02:56.720 --> 00:03:02.000
and waves that were crashing into the boat until it was all but swamped, but

00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:08.040
Jesus was calmly sleeping in the stern, resting on a cushion, so they shook Him

00:03:08.040 --> 00:03:14.160
awake saying, "Teacher, don't you even care that we are all about to die, fully

00:03:14.160 --> 00:03:20.480
awake, He rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea," which I think is a miracle in

00:03:20.480 --> 00:03:26.080
itself, like they woke Him up and it says He was fully awake, like okay Jesus, showing

00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:31.880
off, fully awake, He rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, "Hush, calm down,"

00:03:31.880 --> 00:03:37.000
like He's talking to these kids, "all at once the winds stopped howling and the

00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:41.520
water became perfectly calm, then He turned to His disciples and said to them,

00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:48.040
"Why are you so afraid? Haven't you learned to trust yet?" But they were

00:03:48.040 --> 00:03:55.640
overwhelmed with fear and awe and said to one another, "Who is this man who has such

00:03:55.640 --> 00:04:01.840
authority that even the wind and the waves obey Him?" Jesus looked at him and

00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:08.480
He said, "Why are you so afraid? Haven't you learned to trust yet?"

00:04:08.720 --> 00:04:16.400
It feels to me like a lot of us are living in a Mark 4 moment.

00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:23.160
Jesus and His disciples, they're crossing the Sea of Galilee, the storm is raging

00:04:23.160 --> 00:04:30.120
and Jesus is asleep and the disciples are like, "Teacher, don't you care that

00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:36.080
we're all about to die? Like we're about to drown and you are sleeping." And I think

00:04:36.080 --> 00:04:43.560
that question feels familiar. Like, don't you care what's happening in our world?

00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:47.760
Don't you care what's happening in our country? Don't you care about the

00:04:47.760 --> 00:04:53.480
division, about the uncertainty? Don't you care about what might be coming next?

00:04:54.080 --> 00:05:01.680
And Jesus was sleeping. Now growing up I was told in moments like this that you

00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:06.120
just got to trust Jesus. You've got to have faith, you've got to trust Jesus.

00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:10.680
He knows what's coming next. He's got it. He's got ahead of us. You've got to

00:05:10.680 --> 00:05:23.680
trust Jesus, which sounds good. In His proper, like spiritually I would say,

00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:32.480
yes, makes sense. But how? Like, it seems so abstract to me. What do you mean?

00:05:32.480 --> 00:05:40.120
Like, I don't understand how this works. Like grip my teeth and it's a

00:05:40.120 --> 00:05:45.320
spiritual grit your teeth, pretending not to feel fear. It sounded like

00:05:45.320 --> 00:05:51.120
suppressing like anxiety and worrying to me. That's not true. I didn't know what it

00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:54.600
sounded like then. Now I look back and it's like no, we were just suppressing

00:05:54.600 --> 00:05:59.840
anxiety and fear and be like, I trust Jesus with all of it. But if you look

00:05:59.840 --> 00:06:04.600
closely at this story, the difference in that in that boat was not their

00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:11.080
position. They were in the same storm, same waves, same uncertainty, same lack

00:06:11.080 --> 00:06:18.560
of control. The difference wasn't the experience it was perspective. The

00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:24.600
disciples through fear were looking for certainty. They wanted the storm gone.

00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:33.080
They wanted control restored and they wanted predictability back. Jesus was

00:06:33.080 --> 00:06:39.320
just perceiving the moment differently. He wasn't denying the storm. He wasn't

00:06:39.320 --> 00:06:52.520
interpreting it through fear. He lived rooted in this reverent awe. And I think

00:06:52.520 --> 00:06:56.600
in the moment, Jesus calms the storm, I think there was a teaching moment there

00:06:56.600 --> 00:07:02.480
for his disciples. But I think the storm was just as much the teaching moment for

00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:10.520
them. And Jesus sleeping during the storm was a teaching moment for them. He was

00:07:10.520 --> 00:07:16.160
showing them what it looks like to not live in fear. Maybe to live in this

00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:22.480
place called awe. That all widens, if you look through a camera, you're like

00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:30.640
focused on something, awe would be like zooming out, widens the frame. Fear narrows

00:07:30.640 --> 00:07:37.720
it. It zooms right in on the thing that I'm afraid of. Fear says something bad is

00:07:37.720 --> 00:07:46.040
happening and I must control it. Or awe says something bigger is happening and I'm

00:07:46.040 --> 00:07:55.880
held within it. It's just a different perspective. The disciples were in fear

00:07:55.880 --> 00:08:00.200
of the storm. Jesus was in awe of the Father and an understanding of what the

00:08:00.200 --> 00:08:02.960
love looked like. They were in the same boat, different lens, and the lens

00:08:02.960 --> 00:08:10.040
determined their nervous system and the response in the moment. One produced

00:08:10.040 --> 00:08:21.920
panic, the other produced peace. So maybe trusting Jesus isn't this abstract idea.

00:08:21.920 --> 00:08:30.520
It's not forcing a belief, it's just shifting perspective. What we trust is what

00:08:30.520 --> 00:08:41.240
grows when this idea and this experience, this understanding of awe deepens. So here's

00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:47.520
what this gets interactive. We've been talking about this for six, eight months,

00:08:47.520 --> 00:08:55.360
something like that forever. Everybody take out your phones. I want you to take a

00:08:55.360 --> 00:09:03.960
selfie. I'm just kidding. It's not a test but I just want to check to see if I've

00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:08.760
been making sense over the past few months. Scan the QR code on the back of

00:09:08.760 --> 00:09:15.880
the seats. If you're in the front seat, just reach over. Scan the QR code. Let's

00:09:15.880 --> 00:09:29.360
see if this works. There should be a button there that says awe. Some questions. See

00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:43.760
what I did there? These dad jokes. While you're getting that pulled up, I took

00:09:43.760 --> 00:09:51.000
Jackson the other day to go get his eyes checked. The eye doctor asked him a question.

00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:59.880
He said, what is a pirate's favorite letter? See, you would think it's "R" but it's the

00:09:59.880 --> 00:10:09.560
"C" matey. I was like, that's amazing. He's like, dad's get it. You're going to use

00:10:09.560 --> 00:10:20.760
that one, aren't you? See, it be the "C" matey. You knew it already. All right, so everybody

00:10:20.760 --> 00:10:35.120
there? Now, start answering some questions. Huh? It's a quiz. There's a quote that I've

00:10:35.120 --> 00:10:42.000
said quite a bit. "Ah" is the counterweight to put in the word. Put in any word. You can

00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:49.440
come up with your own word. "Ah" is the counterweight.

00:10:49.440 --> 00:11:06.760
It's like the counter of, it's the, yeah. Like think of a, to balance something, you put

00:11:06.760 --> 00:11:20.340
a counterweight on, that like levels it, brings it so. "Ah" is the counterweight. Give you a

00:11:20.340 --> 00:11:48.760
lot of questions there. Yeah, see him. All right. No cheating. Who's the hunchcake?

00:11:48.760 --> 00:11:58.960
"Ah" is the counterweight. The next one was the "Ah" is the experience of blank and the

00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:23.720
need for blank. That one's multiple choice. I'll give you multiple choice on that one.

00:12:23.720 --> 00:12:30.580
All right. All right. Starting to see him now. Let's see.

00:12:30.580 --> 00:12:42.160
Is everybody done? All right. I'll give you a few more minutes.

00:12:53.720 --> 00:13:00.720
All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right.

00:13:23.720 --> 00:13:49.720
All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right.

00:13:49.720 --> 00:13:59.720
[ Silence ]

00:14:19.720 --> 00:14:38.720
[ Silence ]

00:14:38.720 --> 00:14:43.720
Alright. Let's see how you did.

00:14:43.720 --> 00:14:51.720
[ Silence ]

00:14:51.720 --> 00:14:57.720
Ah, is the counterweight two?

00:14:57.720 --> 00:14:59.720
Do we know?

00:14:59.720 --> 00:15:08.720
How do I see? I won't show you the correct answer yet.

00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:15.720
How do I see it? Show it.

00:15:15.720 --> 00:15:17.720
Switch to host mode.

00:15:17.720 --> 00:15:30.720
Alright. Is the counterweight two ego? Is the...

00:15:30.720 --> 00:15:33.720
Fear? Is a good one?

00:15:33.720 --> 00:15:38.720
Well, it's really whatever.

00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:42.720
It's whatever. Like, it is a counterweight two.

00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:48.720
The quote is ego, but fear was one.

00:15:48.720 --> 00:15:51.720
Alright. We'll go to the next one.

00:15:51.720 --> 00:15:55.720
Ah, is the experience of blank and the need for blank?

00:15:55.720 --> 00:16:00.720
Is it A, B, or C, or D?

00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:03.720
C?

00:16:03.720 --> 00:16:08.720
Is that the correct answer?

00:16:08.720 --> 00:16:11.720
B, vastness and accommodation.

00:16:11.720 --> 00:16:13.720
Ah, is the experience of vastness.

00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:18.720
So, we've explained this where, like, you experience something so big that it makes you feel small, but in a good way.

00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:22.720
And you need to accommodate for what you just experienced.

00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:26.720
Your mind can't comprehend it. You have to accommodate for what you just experienced.

00:16:26.720 --> 00:16:31.720
So, vastness and accommodation. Sorry. I know. This feels like school, right?

00:16:31.720 --> 00:16:34.720
Sorry, guys. You guys are... Look. Look.

00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:37.720
If I got to be back in school, you got to be back in school.

00:16:37.720 --> 00:16:43.720
Who knows the Hebrew word?

00:16:43.720 --> 00:16:46.720
You all do? Well, I know you do. What is it?

00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:53.720
Yerah. Yerah.

00:16:53.720 --> 00:16:56.720
Yerah. Okay. Next one.

00:16:56.720 --> 00:17:03.720
According to research, ah, most strongly increases self-importance... Oh, there you go.

00:17:03.720 --> 00:17:10.720
It's a material. Purpose. Purpose. It... You experience ah, it strongly increases experience.

00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:13.720
Purpose. Who got all of them right?

00:17:13.720 --> 00:17:18.720
Nobody. Man, I am terrible at this. Who got three right?

00:17:18.720 --> 00:17:25.720
Okay. All right. Two. One.

00:17:25.720 --> 00:17:29.720
Oh, there's one more. Sorry. Here, let's see. My fault.

00:17:29.720 --> 00:17:40.720
Last one. When I experience ah, I become more...

00:17:40.720 --> 00:17:45.720
Oh, there's the button I was looking for.

00:17:45.720 --> 00:17:57.720
When I experience ah, I become more... You got grateful, peaceful, aware, at peace, calm, empathetic...

00:17:57.720 --> 00:18:02.720
Quiet, positive. I like these. This is good.

00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:06.720
Oh, okay. We got another one. People add in stuff.

00:18:06.720 --> 00:18:11.720
Loving and lightened. Awesome, duh. Yes.

00:18:11.720 --> 00:18:16.720
Connected to the love of God. Peace-filled and good perspective.

00:18:16.720 --> 00:18:20.720
I see what you did there. Others focused, connected, amazed, aware and peaceful.

00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:27.720
Do you see psychological studies show that this is the truth. This is what happens.

00:18:27.720 --> 00:18:39.720
You become these things. So, again, we go back to looking at how should we be doing this thing as a faith community who follows Jesus?

00:18:39.720 --> 00:18:44.720
How do we get to wisdom? Is it through fear?

00:18:44.720 --> 00:18:49.720
Or is it through the perspective of yerah that is ah?

00:18:49.720 --> 00:18:54.720
Which takes us into a place where we are more loving, more kind, more caring, more generous.

00:18:54.720 --> 00:19:01.720
It almost sounds like it makes us more like Jesus. So...

00:19:01.720 --> 00:19:07.720
Here's what we're going to do now.

00:19:07.720 --> 00:19:19.720
I can see my screen. Uh-oh. We can stop sharing my screen.

00:19:19.720 --> 00:19:27.720
How many people put Happy National Cat Day down for the experience? Oh, alright.

00:19:27.720 --> 00:19:36.720
Alright. So, phone's down for now. Close your eyes. If you feel comfortable.

00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:45.720
Think of a recent moment where you were less reactive than you used to be.

00:19:45.720 --> 00:19:54.720
Maybe that's not yours. Were you a more patient? Were you a more grounded?

00:19:54.720 --> 00:20:12.720
Maybe more compassionate? And the question I have for you was, was that perfection, which in teaching of fear, the goal was perfection.

00:20:12.720 --> 00:20:25.720
But was that perfection, were you becoming perfect? Or was that what we like to call fruit? You experienced something and fruit is produced through you.

00:20:25.720 --> 00:20:32.720
Were you more patient? More grounded? More compassionate? Less reactive than you used to be.

00:20:32.720 --> 00:20:37.720
Alright, now open your eyes. Think about that.

00:20:37.720 --> 00:20:44.720
A group activity, find two or three people around you, and finish this sentence.

00:20:44.720 --> 00:20:48.720
And you're going to discuss it for a couple of minutes. Alright, we're diving into this thing a little bit.

00:20:48.720 --> 00:21:01.720
Lately, ah, has helped me blank. Lately, ah, has helped me, what? Two or three people come and talk, speak.

00:21:01.720 --> 00:21:08.720
Then you'll get some music.

00:21:31.720 --> 00:21:41.720
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:21:41.720 --> 00:22:09.720
Lately, ah, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:22:09.720 --> 00:22:19.720
Lately, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:22:19.720 --> 00:22:48.720
Lately, ah, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:22:48.720 --> 00:23:03.720
Lately, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:23:03.720 --> 00:23:32.720
Lately, ah, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:23:32.720 --> 00:23:42.720
Lately, ah, ah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

00:23:42.720 --> 00:23:52.720
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:24:12.720 --> 00:24:22.720
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:24:37.360 --> 00:24:41.700
All right, all right, let's bring it back, bring back.

00:24:43.640 --> 00:24:47.600
Just put a pen in it, you can talk about it in a couple minutes when I'm done.

00:24:47.600 --> 00:24:51.840
[LAUGH]

00:24:51.840 --> 00:24:57.400
Now, a couple more things, if you set up the survey,

00:24:57.400 --> 00:25:00.840
pull your phone back out and answer the assessment.

00:25:03.840 --> 00:25:07.840
Since we began exploring, I feel less driven by fear and more shaped by peace.

00:25:07.840 --> 00:25:12.000
Answer this honestly, yes or no, has it really just been kind of an abstract idea?

00:25:12.720 --> 00:25:18.440
Do you feel like it has made any impact in life and relationships?

00:25:18.440 --> 00:25:28.440
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:25:34.680 --> 00:25:35.680
All right.

00:25:35.680 --> 00:25:42.680
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:25:42.720 --> 00:25:54.720
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:25:54.720 --> 00:25:55.800
You wish what?

00:25:55.800 --> 00:25:59.160
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:25:59.160 --> 00:26:05.640
I know, we should, proper research would have started with a pre, yeah.

00:26:05.640 --> 00:26:08.600
Look, I hadn't done my research in stats class yet, so.

00:26:08.600 --> 00:26:11.640
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:26:11.640 --> 00:26:14.760
Somebody else has, you could have helped me, you could have told me.

00:26:14.760 --> 00:26:19.040
[LAUGH]

00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:24.560
We're gonna have to do one, we'll do a hypothesis, this will be our sample group.

00:26:24.560 --> 00:26:25.560
Yeah, okay.

00:26:25.560 --> 00:26:28.080
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:26:28.080 --> 00:26:34.960
So, this is good, I like this.

00:26:34.960 --> 00:26:41.600
Since we began exploring awe, I feel less driven by fear and more shaped by peace.

00:26:41.600 --> 00:26:49.520
We are trending in a good direction, which is good.

00:26:49.520 --> 00:26:50.920
That's the hope, right?

00:26:50.920 --> 00:26:54.000
That's the fruit of this.

00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:56.560
Should be that you are experiencing peace in your life.

00:26:56.560 --> 00:27:01.560
That you are experiencing a transformation and relationship and

00:27:01.560 --> 00:27:10.160
how you see people, there's a two percent over there.

00:27:10.160 --> 00:27:13.600
That fear, Robert's still working on it, but.

00:27:13.600 --> 00:27:16.400
You knew, you knew what I was gonna say.

00:27:16.400 --> 00:27:20.160
[LAUGH]

00:27:20.160 --> 00:27:22.160
>> [INAUDIBLE]

00:27:22.160 --> 00:27:25.720
>> [LAUGH]

00:27:25.720 --> 00:27:31.280
>> We have said, well, it's almost four years now, Robert is on Robert's road to

00:27:31.280 --> 00:27:34.080
righteousness and we're, it's a long journey.

00:27:34.080 --> 00:27:38.080
[LAUGH]

00:27:38.080 --> 00:27:39.600
There's also a Q&A section on there.

00:27:39.600 --> 00:27:41.960
If you wanna ask a question, you can do that.

00:27:41.960 --> 00:27:43.160
We're not gonna go into them right now, but

00:27:43.160 --> 00:27:47.760
it'll be something that we can talk about as we go through all of this.

00:27:47.760 --> 00:27:50.280
But, it's one of those things where.

00:27:50.280 --> 00:28:01.480
[BLANK_AUDIO]

00:28:01.480 --> 00:28:06.760
This was never just this exciting thing about like,

00:28:06.760 --> 00:28:11.680
psychologically, I learned this, it was for me this light bulb moment of,

00:28:11.680 --> 00:28:19.480
hey, this actually works in the way that I believe Jesus did life.

00:28:19.480 --> 00:28:24.080
Where, when we experience these, these things,

00:28:24.080 --> 00:28:29.320
these moments of all, it actually brings us into a place where we are more

00:28:29.320 --> 00:28:36.320
connected and more willing to understand what it looks like to not just be focused

00:28:36.320 --> 00:28:43.680
on me, if awe is the counterweight to ego, then it begins to suppress ego.

00:28:43.680 --> 00:28:49.120
Where I am now more connected, more focused on others.

00:28:49.120 --> 00:28:52.440
Which seems to be what the gospel calls us to.

00:28:57.440 --> 00:29:00.720
I'll look at questions real quick, but, man, there's a lot now.

00:29:02.320 --> 00:29:05.720
How do we explain to someone, how do we explain awe to someone who's always

00:29:05.720 --> 00:29:08.040
living and seeing things through fear?

00:29:08.040 --> 00:29:11.360
I think there's, there's a couple different things that we've talked about

00:29:11.360 --> 00:29:18.080
throughout this series, that there's the big moments.

00:29:18.080 --> 00:29:23.080
The moments that you stand and you overlook the Grand Canyon and

00:29:23.080 --> 00:29:30.720
you are just mind blown, that this big hole exists, right?

00:29:30.720 --> 00:29:35.000
Just the beauty of it, or you drive through Northern California or

00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:42.440
Oregon into the trees and you see these matte, like just mind blowing.

00:29:42.440 --> 00:29:46.040
And it makes you realize that you're on this, there's some,

00:29:46.040 --> 00:29:49.560
this is much bigger than just me, there's something happening here.

00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:57.160
And then there's the moments of small moments where you meet someone.

00:29:57.160 --> 00:30:03.680
How many times do we meet someone, we see them, we know exactly who they are.

00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:13.000
And then they do something and you're like, oh, that is not what I expected from you.

00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:20.000
Something kind, something in you, I have to accommodate what I just experienced.

00:30:24.000 --> 00:30:30.000
A few years back, 2017, right around the time we started the arsenal,

00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:35.000
I was at a coffee shop and I'd gone in.

00:30:35.000 --> 00:30:40.000
At that point, I had a beard that looked like Duncan's.

00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:41.000
Some of you guys remember that.

00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:50.000
Beard looked like, you know, big, bushy beard, army veteran.

00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:54.000
And I walked into this coffee shop and got a coffee and there was a couple

00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:58.000
of pastors and some of their friends sitting and have some coffee.

00:30:58.000 --> 00:31:00.000
And they were having a pretty heated conversation.

00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:04.000
Not even heated, they were all very agreeable to each other.

00:31:04.000 --> 00:31:08.000
It was kind of, it was, it was getting loud.

00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:14.000
What they were talking about was at that point, Colin Kaepernick in the NFL

00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:25.000
had taken a knee during the National Anthem as a protest to violence

00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:30.000
and inequality for African Americans in the US.

00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:36.000
And this pastor looks at me and he goes, Chad, you're going to agree with us.

00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:38.000
Come here, you're going to have a good perspective.

00:31:38.000 --> 00:31:40.000
You're a veteran.

00:31:40.000 --> 00:31:44.000
And I looked at him and I was like, because I heard the conversation.

00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:48.000
And I was like, I don't think I'm going to agree with what you think I am.

00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:50.000
And he was like, really?

00:31:50.000 --> 00:31:51.000
You're a veteran.

00:31:51.000 --> 00:31:53.000
Like, you're an offended.

00:31:53.000 --> 00:32:02.000
And I looked at him and I said, man, I think this is what freedom looks like.

00:32:02.000 --> 00:32:08.000
And so for me, I feel like I'm not offended.

00:32:08.000 --> 00:32:16.000
I think the moment there is to step back and say, why does he feel like he needs to do this?

00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:24.000
He's offended because there's some thing that has been told to us that is super important,

00:32:24.000 --> 00:32:32.000
but there's a human being trying to say something about harm.

00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:37.000
And so the question there is not, well, how do we fix this?

00:32:37.000 --> 00:32:38.000
He's offending me.

00:32:38.000 --> 00:32:43.000
No, it's, well, why does he feel like he needs to do this?

00:32:43.000 --> 00:32:47.000
That's that moment of stepping back.

00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:51.000
I don't know the experience of Colin Kaepernick.

00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:57.000
I don't know the experience of being a black person in our country.

00:32:57.000 --> 00:33:06.000
So I have to step back and accommodate and listen and be curious.

00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:09.000
And that's what all does.

00:33:09.000 --> 00:33:12.000
It's the step back.

00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:15.000
It's the zoom out.

00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:18.000
You may not, you may not still agree.

00:33:18.000 --> 00:33:22.000
But at least you zoomed out.

00:33:22.000 --> 00:33:26.000
And now you know that there are people that have a different opinion about things than

00:33:26.000 --> 00:33:33.000
you and they're not terrible human beings.

00:33:33.000 --> 00:33:41.000
And I think we need that right now more than anything to zoom out, step back.

00:33:41.000 --> 00:33:50.000
A lot of times, ways that we treat each other as human beings,

00:33:50.000 --> 00:33:56.000
especially negative ways that we treat each other, is all driven out of some form of fear.

00:33:56.000 --> 00:34:03.000
So I have to step back and accommodate and say, well, what are they afraid of?

00:34:03.000 --> 00:34:07.000
And then begin to ask and wonder.

00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:10.000
Uncertainty is a good place to live.

00:34:10.000 --> 00:34:16.000
Wonder is the outcome of experiencing awe.

00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:18.000
You live in this place of wonder.

00:34:18.000 --> 00:34:28.000
I think this drives us into a moment where we are more loving, more kind, more caring, less offended.

00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:37.000
It makes me in Galatians 3, I think it's the passion translation.

00:34:37.000 --> 00:34:46.000
Paul's talking about what it looks like to experience being a person who's living in Christ.

00:34:46.000 --> 00:34:48.000
What does a new creation look like?

00:34:48.000 --> 00:34:56.000
And one of the things he says in there is to be unoffendable in your patience with others.

00:34:56.000 --> 00:35:00.000
And this is the only way we can do that.

00:35:00.000 --> 00:35:10.000
We are connected. If someone sings something in Spanish, just step back.

00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:16.000
If you don't understand, it's going to be okay.

00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:21.000
Just enjoy it.

00:35:21.000 --> 00:35:26.000
Right?

00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:29.000
I'm going to look at these questions and I'll get back to them.

00:35:29.000 --> 00:35:35.000
I'm just going to read a passage and we're done.

00:35:35.000 --> 00:35:42.000
If fear is the root of our life, then the fruit will look like fear.

00:35:42.000 --> 00:35:48.000
And if awe is the root, then I believe the fruit will look like Jesus.

00:35:48.000 --> 00:35:57.000
And I love how the passion translation translates Galatians 5 and the list of the fruit of the spirit.

00:35:57.000 --> 00:36:02.000
So if we live in this place, we're rooted in this experience of awe, we're looking for it.

00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:11.000
We are trying to find new things to give us wonder.

00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:14.000
Our relationships begin to look like this.

00:36:14.000 --> 00:36:25.000
But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions.

00:36:25.000 --> 00:36:36.000
It's the way that overflows, the peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action.

00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:47.000
A life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit.

00:36:47.000 --> 00:36:54.000
Because I'm going to say never set the law above these qualities for they are meant to be limitless.

00:36:54.000 --> 00:37:02.000
Keep in mind that we who belong to Jesus, the anointed one, have already experienced crucifixion.

00:37:02.000 --> 00:37:07.000
Paul says that we've died in Christ.

00:37:07.000 --> 00:37:11.000
It's no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

00:37:11.000 --> 00:37:18.000
He was on to say for everything connected with our self-life was put to death on the cross and crucified with Messiah.

00:37:18.000 --> 00:37:25.000
We must live in the Holy Spirit and follow after Him, so may we never be arrogant.

00:37:25.000 --> 00:37:31.000
Or look down on another for each of us is an original.

00:37:31.000 --> 00:37:37.000
We must forsake all jealousy that diminishes the value of others.

00:37:37.000 --> 00:37:48.000
I believe this is the fruit of always step back. We find these moments of all.

00:37:48.000 --> 00:37:52.000
One of the best ways to experience it is to see other people.

00:37:52.000 --> 00:37:59.000
It's called through moral kindness when you see someone else be morally kind to another person.

00:37:59.000 --> 00:38:05.000
You experience this, oh, that's the moment of all.

00:38:05.000 --> 00:38:08.000
That's the moment of all. It becomes contagious.

00:38:08.000 --> 00:38:12.000
That's that moment where there's tears into your eyes. You're not sad.

00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:16.000
What was that? That's all.

00:38:16.000 --> 00:38:21.000
Because it shows you what humanity can be when we step back.

00:38:21.000 --> 00:38:30.000
We see people as originals and as people to be loved and as valuable.

00:38:30.000 --> 00:38:35.000
And we need that more than anything right now.

00:38:35.000 --> 00:38:43.000
Imagine if the church was driven by experiences of all and not fear.

00:38:43.000 --> 00:38:50.000
Then I think transformation happens in our world, in our country, but in our community.

00:38:50.000 --> 00:38:54.000
We're going to start here.

00:38:54.000 --> 00:38:58.000
Let's go experience this. Let's go love people well.

00:38:58.000 --> 00:39:01.000
Find those moments of all.

00:39:01.000 --> 00:39:04.000
So the fruit can produce through you.

00:39:04.000 --> 00:39:11.000
And you'll see love in all its great virtues, varying forms, expressions.

00:39:11.000 --> 00:39:15.000
Love you guys. Let's go love well. We'll see you next week.

00:39:15.000 --> 00:39:15.000
That's not true.
