Speaker 0: Good morning, Northern Michigan. This is your cup of Traverse City for the 04/10/2026. I'm Mike, and it's Friday. So today, I wanna talk more about road construction, on top of what I talked about yesterday at 3 Mile Road, which, by the way, as of the recording of this, the road is still open, but, we'll see how how long that, is today or whether they actually close the road today. I don't know.

But, the other big one in the area is The US 31 rebuilding that has supposedly started. I haven't been out that way, but, let's see. So that's where they're gonna put a roundabout in Interlochen right there, at North Or South Long Lake Road, J Matty Parkway in US 31, otherwise known as Interlocking Corners. No. It's gonna be not Interlocking Corners because it's gonna be round.

I don't know. I I like roundabouts to a point, but I wish people would learn a little more about them and, how you're supposed to act, but that's a whole another soapbox I'll get into, some other time. So, basically, what they're doing is they are rebuilding the road from Sullivan Road to just west of oh, well, actually, it says from Sullivan Road in Green Lake Township all the way to Reynolds Road in Inland Township, Benzie County. Okay. So a little further west than I remember.

It's supposed to begin April 13, which, is, I guess, next Monday. I guess it wouldn't be closing the road today. I keep thinking it's Monday. Why would I think Friday's Monday? Anyway, also, on Monday, they're starting that.

So that'll be interesting. But, basically, the upshot is that, from this coming Monday all the way till November 13, there's going to be some disruption in that area. The North Side of US 31 will be rebuilt between Sullivan Road and West of Jay Matty Parkway south on Lake Road intersection, including building a roundabout. The southbound US 31 traffic will be maintained, which means, you know, because really that's kind of an East West road at that point, but officially heading towards Benzie County from Grand Traverse County is south, even though it's not. It's west, but direction of the highway, I guess.

So that will be maintained from April through June, and the northbound traffic heading towards Traverse City will be detoured on Gonder Road, Riley Road, and J Matty Parkway, Euka Road, and County Road 633. So, basically, you'll turn right before you get to Interlochen. You'll go into Interlochen from from, that way on, Riley Road, I guess. And then have to go down to Euchre Road and then across, and you'll come out in Grand back on, 31. So that's quite the the the, quite the detour.

You know, last year they had that closed for a little while while they were doing some stuff and, yeah, what a major pain in the behind but just, you know, be be aware of that if you're going west or east, you know, either coming in or going out of Traverse City to the west. The, you know, that's gonna be a a total pain. And then let's see. June and July, the South side of US 31 will be rebuilt between Sullivan Road and West of J Matty Parkway. So they're, you know, gonna be working on one, you know, on the north side, then they're gonna be working on the south side and including that roundabout.

So southbound traffic will still be maintained on 31, while northbound traffic will be detoured the same way. Yeah. That is not fun. The the parkway or the Jay Matty Parkway, which, used to be M 137, you know, that's Interlochen, Carlin Road, going that way, will be closed for most of that or at least access to it off 31 will be closed for most of that, time between, June and July. And then July through November, rebuilding a 31 west of South Lawn Lake Road, down to Reynolds Road.

Southbound 31 traffic will be maintained on 31, while northbound traffic will be detoured on Reynolds Road, Cinder Road, Diamond Park Road, Gonder Road, Riley Road, and J. Matty Parkway. That's even longer. Remember last summer, we, you know, we camped over that way. And, last summer, they were redoing the south side of Reynolds Road to accommodate the extra traffic.

So that's crazy. Let's see. It's gonna directly and indirectly support 275 jobs. And once it's all done, the safety at interlocking corners, the roundabout will be better. And and, you know, they've done that in other places, on 131 in Fife Lake.

That there was always fatal acts accidents there, you know, just more frequently than it needed to be. And they really helped that out by putting that roundabout there. So I I totally get why they wanna do this kind of stuff. You know, we we around here get tired of the roundabouts, but, you know, because everybody wants the you know, they they're putting roundabouts everywhere. Well, you know, once people learn how to to to work them, and it's gonna be unavoidable, you're gonna have to because, you know, getting around Traverse City, I can't leave my house and go I I guess I can get into town without hitting a roundabout, And if I don't go too far south, I can do it without a roundabout.

But if I wanna go up to Chum's Corners, I got two roundabouts. If I wanna go to, Garfield from here, I got I got one at least. When we go up to Leelanau, I got that other one. You know, they're they're they're a thing, and, they definitely do help, with safety. Now frustration levels can get a little higher, at some roundabout.

It depends on who you're following. I was following some lady. Who was it? Wednesday. Had to go out for an appointment in Chumps Corners area, and she would stop at every intersection in the roundabout.

Not not just getting onto the roundabout, but she would stop. And it was that one on, Keystone Road at, what is that? Cass Road, where the dam used to be. And, you know, of course, there's three roads, you know, to go straight. You you hit, you know, the the bypass part.

You hit the hit that one. You know? And she just would stop before she would yeah. Just it was it was frustrating. And, of course, I was running right on time, not not late, but right on time for my appointment.

So, yeah, grumble, grumble, grouch, grouch. Anyway, I've got links to a couple of stories, there in the show notes over at cupoftraversecity.com. And let's see. Today, a 20% chance of rain before 9AM. Mostly cloudy with a high near 45.

So and Monday, 30% chance of showers. Yeah. Well, you know, April showers, they say. Everybody have a good weekend.
